The Rotaract Club of University of Sri Jayewardenepura, chartered on the 1st of September 2011, is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Battaramulla and holds over 200 members from all the faculties of the University, continuing to be one of the largest Rotaract Clubs within the Rotaract District 3220. The club holds a diversified team with members belonging to different faiths, ethnicities and cultures, which gives them the strength to stand as one.
Rotaract Club of University of Sri Jayewardenepura surpassed many milestones over the past 10 years. Since its inception in the year 2011, the club has achieved many recognitions and awards. Rotaract Club of University of Sri Jayewardenepura was recognized as one of the best charter clubs of the Rotaract District 3220 and in the following year, won the most outstanding fundraising project and finance project of the year for project “Bach to Beatles” which was a classical music show. While reaching a milestone of 100 active members, the club was also awarded with the Rotary International Citation for the first time in the history of the club.
In the year 2013-2014, the club was recognized with over 5 awards at the Rotaract District Assembly for the very first time, and the project “Nethu Dahasak” which was a musical concert conducted in aid of visually impaired students in the University, was awarded the Silver award for the most outstanding community service initiative.
In the year 2014-2015, project “I sea you” which was organized with the intention of providing an opportunity for Rotaractors to expand their network, won the Bronze award for the most outstanding club service initiative and during the following year, the club won the Gold award for being the most supportive and participative club of the year and Sri Lanka Army recognized the club for successfully organizing project “Rana Handa” which provided a platform for war heroes to showcase their talents.
In year 2016-2017, cluster project “Future Leaders Classroom”, an initiative to create a platform for all students to engage in their studies won the award for the best resource utilization, and continuing the legacy in year 2017-2018, project “Butterfly Effect”, an initiative focusing on mental health and wellbeing, was awarded the Gold award for the most outstanding special project.
Marking the eighth year in the history of the Rotaract Club of University of Sri Jayewardenepura, cluster project “Thaneer”, an initiative focused on water sanitation and first aid was awarded the most impactful cluster initiative, “Youth Entrepreneurship Summit 2019”, a project initiated with the intention of devising an extensive platform for young entrepreneurs to proclaim their unrivalled business ideas, won the best project for youth service and project “Literato 19”, the literature extravaganza was awarded the Gold award for the most outstanding international understanding project of the year.
In the year 2019-2020, project “Someone’s Daughter” won the gold award for the most outstanding social media campaign. This project was an initiative organized to stand up for violence against women and to create awareness about this timely topic. The club was also awarded the Silver award for “Literato 20” as the most outstanding international understanding project of the year with a participation of 9 international Rotaract Clubs with over 500 participants, Project “Attitude” organized with 9 other Rotaract clubs won the Silver award for the most outstanding cluster initiative and marking yet another milestone, the club was awarded the best emerging Rotaract Club of the Year at the 30th Rotaract District Assembly.
This year marks 10 years since the journey began for the Rotaract Club of University of Sri Jayewardenepura. Many initiatives were planned to be held throughout the year to commemorate this milestone but the pandemic was their biggest barrier; yet striving together as one, the club successfully completed many impactful projects.
All these achievements were possible because the club was always bestowed with passionate leaders backed by a strong member base filled with enthusiasm, confidence and good cheer. Rotaract Club of University of Sri Jayewardenepura can be phrased as a family more than another volunteer organization, with members from all corners of the nation who speak different languages, belonging to different cultures and with different faiths. This diversity adds more color to the name “Rotaract Club of University of Sri Jayewardenepura” and gives the club the energy and passion to continue the legacy for years to come.
